The Joy of Keeping a Root Cellar

The next book project with Jennifer Megyesi is well underway, and has made it onto Skyhorse Publishing's Web site. The Joy of Keeping a Root Cellar explores ways to put up the harvest for winter — I'm interested myself in turning our old cistern into a root cellar. Check out the book's description from the Skyhorse site:

THE JOY OF KEEPING A ROOT CELLAR

The Ultimate Guide to Canning, Freezing, Drying, Smoking and Cellaring the Harvest
Jennifer Megyesi
Photography by Geoff Hansen

The winning team behind The Joy of Keeping Chickens returns, this time with a complete guide to building and maintaining a root cellar—even if it's just a dark and cool closet. This cheap, easy, energy-saving way will keep the harvest fresh all year long. Here, readers will learn:
• Which fruits and vegetables store best
• How to build a root cellar in the country, suburbs, or city
• How to deal with specific environmental challenges
• Storage techniques ranging from canning to pickling and smoking to drying
• Recipes for everything from tomato sauce to venison jerky Root cellaring isn't just for off-the-grid types or farmers with large gardens. Storing food makes good sense, both financially and environmentally. And root cellars can easily fit anywhere. In this intelligent, convincing book, authors Megyesi and Hansen show how to make them part of every reader's life.

Wedding Photography Update

Since it's quieted down a bit, I've had time to update my Web site with new wedding photography work from this past summer. I had an enjoyable season, meeting a lot of interesting couples and traveling across New England. In addition to work from the Early Season Weddings post, the photos below are also on my site. To see more, click here.

From above, the couple exchanges vows in the backyard of the bride's family home in Springfield, N.H., in August; groom and bride "tie the knot" during their August ceremony in Post Mills, Vt.; the couple walk down the aisle to the theme from the movie "Rocky" in Charlotte, Vt., in August; the couple receives happy wishes from friends after their ceremony in Woodstock, Vt., in May; members of the band hit the dance floor to entertain the crowd at a reception in Franconia, N.H., in June; the father of the groom enjoys a cigar during the August reception in Chester, Vt.; guests toast the married couple during the reception in Stockbridge, Vt., in August; the couple walks along the fence line for formal pictures in Stockbridge; the couple watches fireworks in the their honor in Springfield.

deborahsalemsmith.com

I just finished designing deborahsalemsmith.com, featuring the work of Deborah Salem Smith, an up-and-coming playwright based in Rhode Island. Deb's two most recent plays, Some Things Are Private and Boots on the Ground, received excellent reviews from The Boston Globe. Click here to read more!

Tasty Scraps

Last week, I went to McGoff's Salvage in Orford, N.H., to do a quick photo page for the Valley News. I enjoyed talking with owner Jim McGoff and hiking around his yard to find interesting cars and parts to photograph. I could have been there all day, but I had to get back to my other responsibilities. Here's a few photos from the page:

From top, a "bullet nose" 1950 Studebaker, last registered in 1952, is surrounded by trees — McGoff said there weren't any trees in the field when he parked it there 30 years ago; a tire is covered in leaves — McGoff said there's still a demand for tires by farmers who use them to hold down tarps covering their silage; parked at the yard's fence line, a 1957 Chevrolet station wagon faces out to a neighbor's field in honor of its owner, a friend of McGoff's who died young.

Tunbridge Halloween Party

For the second year in a row, I photographed kids in costume at a Halloween party hosted by dedicated parents at the Tunbridge Central School. Last year I went to do a photo package for the Valley News — I returned because I enjoyed seeing how costumes and personas came together. Click here to see more.
